Home page for the Success Project
The principal objective of the Success project is to prepare
educational material for teachers of marine engineering students that demonstrates
the applications of satellite observations of surface wave behaviour.

Duration
November 1996 - June 1998
Approach
Materials under preparation by the team include a text-book, video
and slides. It is intended to translate the book (which is written
in English) into 3 or 4 other European languages depending on resources.
These are likely to be French, German, Italian and one other.
Progress
November 1997
A first draft of the multi-author
text-book is completed. David Carter of SOS is the book¹s editor
and SOS staff contributed the first 3 chapters. The Table of Contents
is listed below:
1
Observing the sea from space
2
Altimeter measurements of surface waves and wind speed
3
Synthetic aperture radar
4
Sea states and wave characteristics
5
Wave spectra and wave models
6
Extreme events
7
Statistical model choice and estimation
8
Applications
9
Exercises and examples
Appendices
March 1999
The project was extended by some months. The English version of the text book has been completed and sent to IFREMER where it is being printed, and should be available during April. Translations into French, Greek and Italian are underway. The video should be available later this year.
May 1999
The textbook and video were officially launched at a press conference in Brest during
the 9th ISOPE Conference.
