SAR Open Ocean CLS Cryosat Data

Coverage:  A small set of tracks located in the large SAR area of the equatorial Pacific ocean

Time Period: May 2012

Cryosat-2 Data Products Used: CPP SAR L1b Products

Method: The CPP SAR-mode retracking algorithm is a standard least squares estimator consisting in fitting a Doppler waveform with a multi-looked echo model that is pre-computed off-line by a simulator. The main innovation of this approach resides in the generation of the echo model database in which the sensitive parameters (sea-state, satellite parameters) vary, one parameter at a time, in a range of values and with a step size, that have been chosen to ensure the accuracy and precision of the estimates. This numerical method is considered to be more robust than analytical ones, particularly when faced with atypical observations (e.g., elliptical antenna pattern, off-nadir mispointing angles, point target response) that are difficult to put into equations
